Natural Ways to Boost Immune System for SeniorsEven though the high point of flu season may be over, here at Silversphere, we know it is always important to be proactive about your health. That is why we wanted to share with you some natural ways to boost the immune system for seniors.

Drink Water

One of the best way to naturally boost your loved one’s immune system is to make sure they are drinking plenty of water. Dehydration can be a grave health concern for older adults. If the senior in your care has mobility restrictions, be sure that they keep a water bottle near them and to fill it up often. Limit sugary drinks and drinks high in caffeine.

Healthy Lifestyle

Eating healthy and getting plenty of sleep is beneficial for multiple areas of your life, especially for keeping the senior in your life’s immune system strong. Make sure their diet is colorful, or has an abundance of fruits and vegetables, with little red meat and sugars. Cruciferous vegetables, such as cabbage, kale, and broccoli, have been directly linked with strengthening the immune system. It is also essential to make sure they are getting plenty of sleep so their body can repair and defend itself naturally.

Natural Supplements

There are multiple supplements you can add to your diet to naturally boost the immune system of the senior in your life. Be sure to check with your loved one’s primary care physician that adding any supplements to their diet will not react with any of the medications they may be taking. Some of the most effective essential oils, herbs, and supplement to strengthen your immune system are astragalus root, colloidal silver, echinacea, elderberry, garlic, ginger, ginseng, oregano. It is also important to remind your loved one to take their vitamins, especially vitamin A, B2, B6, C, D, and E. The best source naturally of vitamin D is from the sun itself. Be sure your loved one is getting fresh air daily, take them for a walk, or sit on the porch for half an hour in the sun.

De-stress

Emotional stress can lead to extremely adverse health and life-threatening situations, such as hives and heart disease. That is why a great way to naturally boost the immune system for seniors is to help them de-stress. The best way to relieve stress and release endorphins is to exercise regularly. When you make sure your loved one is getting exercise, you are helping them lower their blood pressure, control their weight, protect against disease and improve cardiovascular health. Activities that could be a perfect fit for the senior in your life are swimming, walking, chair exercises and yoga. Another technique to lower your loved one’s stress levels is meditation. This can be as simple as breathing exercises, such as abdominal, belly, and diaphragmatic breathing practices. Deep breathing encourages oxygen to smoothly flow through the bloodstream to the organs, strengthening your body as a whole.

While these natural ways to boost the immune system for seniors are helpful, they are not a fix-all to diseases and viruses. Be sure to stay up to date on any vaccinations for the age group of your relatives, especially the ones that the National Institute of Aging recommends. Be sure to help your loved one eat healthily, get adequate sleep, drink plenty of water while avoiding smoking and drinking too much alcohol.
